Obverse
On the obverse side of 1/4 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds is a stunning replica of the Aztec Calendar Stone. This carving is truly a marvel to look at, full of intricate detail laid out with perfect symmetry. The calendar depicts aspects of Aztec cosmology, including the sun god Tonatiuh in the center. He is surrounded by four blocks that represent the previous suns, or eras, in Aztec history. Along the edges, you will find a dazzling network of patterns full of complexity, meaning, and precision.
Reverse
The reverse of 1/4 oz Aztec Calendar Rounds features a portrait of Cuauhtmoc. This emperor was the final Aztec ruler before the Spanish Conquest wiped out the empire. Youll find an inscription underneath it that reads CUAUHTEMOC. Additional inscriptions read QUARTER TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER. There is also an Aztec-themed design surrounding the border.
History
Despite its name, this historic stone carving does not feature a calendar in the traditional sense. Instead, it depicts elements of Aztec culture related to sun deities. Though now somewhat faded, the central image on the stone is suspected to be Tonatiuh, the fifth and final Aztec sun god. However, some historians now believe it belongs to an earth monster named Tlaltecuhtli. The intricate design as a whole is said to trace the origin of the universe. A central notion in the Aztecs cosmology was the idea that the universe is divided into different eras, or suns. The four squares around the center of the stone represent these eras, each of which ended in a cataclysmic event. When the stone was carved, the Aztecs were in the era of a fifth sun, which they called Four Movement.
