Throughout Woodrow Wilson’s presidency, Edith Wilson played a crucial role as an influential First Lady, actively participating in her husband’s administration and providing valuable insights on political matters.

Obverse

The 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Wilson Gold Coin’s obverse design elegantly portrays a front-facing portrait of Edith Wilson, capturing her grace and strength. Inscriptions include EDITH WILSON, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 28TH, 1915-1921, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2013-W Edith Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coin depicts a touching scene of the First Lady holding President Wilson’s hand as he leans on a cane, symbolizing the challenging time when he suffered a severe stroke in September 1919, leaving him partially paralyzed and unable to fulfill his presidential duties. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Edith Wilson’s level of influence sparked controversy, as some critics saw her actions as overstepping the bounds of the First Lady’s traditional role.
